About Wildcat Canyon Falls

Wildcat Canyon Falls is a plunge in Illinois, on Wildcat Canyon Creek.

It's fullest after rain, and flow can drop off during dry spells — plan around recent weather.

Plungeworthy rates Wildcat Canyon Falls 3.6/10 — one for the list. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.

What you'll find

Wildcat Canyon Falls is the tallest drop at Starved Rock State Park — sources put it anywhere from 65 to 90 feet, and the canyon holding it is the deepest in the park at about 90 feet of sheer St. Peter sandstone.

It's a seasonal falls: snowmelt and storms turn it on, dry spells turn it off. Winter is the other season that matters — Wildcat is one of only three sanctioned ice-climbing sites at Starved Rock, and the frozen column is the park's most dramatic sight.

People have died falling from the canyon rim here. The overlook railings and the canyon-floor trail exist so you don't have to improvise — use them.
