About Grand Falls
Grand Falls is a 40-foot block in Maine, on Dead River.
It's fullest after rain, and flow can drop off during dry spells — plan around recent weather.
Plungeworthy rates Grand Falls 7.3/10 — worth the drive. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.
What you'll find
Grand Falls is a wide, horseshoe-shaped 40-foot drop spanning about 100 feet across the Dead River, deep in unorganized territory between Flagstaff Lake and The Forks. It's one of the most remote falls in Maine and one of the most visually dramatic given its width.
The setting is genuine backcountry — wetlands and rolling forest along the Dead River corridor, with the falls historically serving as the centerpiece attraction for the Grand Falls Hut in the Maine Huts & Trails system.
Be precise about which access works: the hut has been closed for years after flood damage, and the long-distance hut trail corridor remains closed with it. The falls itself is still reachable — a short trail from the Dead River rafting put-in bypasses the closed hut trail entirely.
Getting there
- Trailhead
- Dead River rafting put-in, via Lower Enchanted Road
- Parking
- Large parking areas at the put-in
- Road
- From The Forks: Route 201 north 8.3 miles, left on Lower Enchanted Road (dirt) 14.1 miles to the put-in. The Eustis-side approach is gated — you can no longer drive close to the falls from that direction
- Hike
- 1 mi round trip (Easy with one steep pitch)
- Heads up
- Two route options from the put-in: a steep 0.3-mile Maine Huts Trail spur, or a longer 0.6-mile ATV/snowmobile trail bypass to the same viewing lookout.
When to go
Scenic year-round — particularly striking with ice lining the river in winter, though winter access means a long snowmobile trip. Spring and fall Dead River whitewater releases draw heavy crowds to the put-in area.
The Maine Huts Trail corridor to Grand Falls Hut remains closed after flood damage took out more than 18 bridges; a state trail grant is funding the first phase of rehabilitation. Don't plan a through-hike on the hut trail — use the put-in route.
Rules & fees
- Camping
- Grand Falls Hut is closed; camping options along the Dead River corridor are limited pending trail rehab
- Warnings
- Remote area — wildlife on access roads, no services. The long hut-trail route is closed and should not be attempted as through-access.

Before you go
The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
