About Wauneta Falls

Wauneta Falls is a 8-foot block in Nebraska, on Frenchman Creek.

It's fullest after rain, and flow can drop off during dry spells — plan around recent weather.

Plungeworthy rates Wauneta Falls 5.2/10 — if you're passing. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.

What you'll find

Know what this listing is: Wauneta Falls no longer exists. It was a real and locally beloved falls on Frenchman Creek — the town of Wauneta grew up around it from 1875, and a hundred-barrel roller mill ran at the falls from 1887 — until the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation destroyed it in 1951 during construction of the Enders Dam irrigation project.

What survives is the setting: the Frenchman Creek valley near Wauneta, locally called Nebraska's 'Little Grand Canyon,' has a scenic overlook on Route 6 that a local Eagle Scout project reopened in 1996.

We keep the page as history — the falls itself has been gone for three quarters of a century.

Before you go

The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
