About Bartlett Falls
Bartlett Falls is a 14-foot punchbowl in Vermont, on New Haven River.
It's fullest after rain, and flow can drop off during dry spells — plan around recent weather.
Plungeworthy rates Bartlett Falls 6.2/10 — worth a detour. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.
What you'll find
Bartlett Falls (locally called Bristol Falls) is where the New Haven River sheets over a bedrock shelf and drops 14 feet into a large, deep pool — about 40 feet wide and 120 feet long — with high ledges to jump from on the north side and a shallow sunbathing area downstream. The falls' cliff is significantly undercut, so swimmers can duck behind the curtain of falling water.
It's less a hidden gem than a full-blown community institution: on a hot summer weekend it draws hundreds of Vermonters, cars line Lincoln Road, and the pool is genuinely packed. This is swim-hole culture at its most concentrated in the state.
The setting is unglamorous by design — roadside pull-off, no facilities — which is part of its appeal as an authentic local spot rather than a manicured park.

When to go
Summer weekends are extremely crowded; early mornings and weekdays are the only way to get the pool to yourself. This is Vermont's marquee swim hole and locals plan around avoiding peak hours.
Water is coldest and highest in spring; by late summer the pool is warmer but flow can drop noticeably in a dry year.
Rules & fees
- Warnings
- A fatal drowning occurred here in June 2025 — hydraulics beneath the falls can trap and pin swimmers, and the rocks are moss-slick. No lifeguard, no rescue equipment on site, and cell service is unreliable. Treat the pool with respect.

Before you go
The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
