About Hamilton Falls
Hamilton Falls is a 80-foot tiered in Vermont, on Cobb Brook. The water falls in 3 distinct tiers.
It's fullest after rain, and flow can drop off during dry spells — plan around recent weather.
Plungeworthy rates Hamilton Falls 8.1/10 — worth the drive. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.
What you'll find
Hamilton Falls drops roughly 80 feet down Cobb Brook in a natural rock chute system, with a genuinely scenic upper pool and a notorious middle pool below it that the state now actively discourages visitors from approaching — steep, slippery rock has caused more than a dozen deaths here over the years.
It's simultaneously one of Vermont's most popular swimming and picnicking destinations and one of its most dangerous, which is exactly why Vermont FPR developed a formal master plan for the site in 2024: new state-land parking, railed viewing platforms at the upper pool, and explicit signage steering people away from the middle pool.
The classic approach is a serious commitment — a 3-mile one-way hike from Jamaica State Park with steep, rocky sections — which naturally filters out casual visitors compared to a roadside falls.
Getting there
- Trailhead
- Jamaica State Park (primary), via the West River Trail and Switch Road Trail; limited FPR roadside parking also exists on West Windham Road
- Parking
- Jamaica State Park lot ($5/adult day-use) or very limited roadside FPR parking on West Windham Road
- Road
- Jamaica State Park entrance off VT Route 30, Jamaica
- Hike
- 6 mi round trip (Moderate to strenuous — steep and rocky sections)
- Heads up
- A section of the West River Trail has been gated since a landslide; visitors currently walk around the gate.
When to go
Weekend visitation reaches roughly 100 people a day, about 40 on weekdays — busy by Vermont waterfall standards. The state's own planning documents describe a site struggling with its popularity. Treat it as an early-morning or weekday visit.

Before you go
The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
