About Sutherland Falls
Sutherland Falls is a 85-foot tiered in Vermont, on Otter Creek. The water falls in 2 distinct tiers.
It's fullest after rain, and flow can drop off during dry spells — plan around recent weather.
Plungeworthy rates Sutherland Falls 8.7/10 — drop everything. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.
What you'll find
Sutherland Falls drops Otter Creek — Vermont's longest river — roughly 85-88 feet over a rugged bedrock ramp, historically one of the most powerful waterfalls in New England and the industrial power source for the adjacent Vermont Marble Company starting in the 1880s.
What makes it distinct today is the tension between its industrial history and diminished present: a Green Mountain Power hydroelectric station now diverts most of the creek's flow, so the falls run at reduced volume most of the year rather than the full-force cascade of a century ago. Honest expectation-setting: outside high water, you're seeing a fraction of what this falls once was.
It's also the most effortless waterfall visit in the state — a short paved drive ends at a small formal park with a viewing bridge built specifically for public access, plus a portage point for canoes and kayaks going around the falls.
Getting there
- Trailhead

- Road
- VT Route 3 to Proctor, then Patch Street
- Hike
- 0.1 mi round trip (Drive-up, minimal walking)

When to go
Viewable year-round given the drive-up access. Spring high water is the show — that's when the river outruns the hydro diversion and the falls approach their historical volume. Noticeably reduced by mid-to-late summer.

Before you go
The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
