About Mystic Falls

Mystic Falls is a tiered in Wyoming, on Little Firehole River. The water falls in 3 distinct tiers.

Fed largely by snowmelt, it runs hardest in late spring and early summer and can thin to a trickle by late season.

Plungeworthy rates Mystic Falls 4.7/10 — if you're passing. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.

What you'll find

A 70-foot fan on the Little Firehole River, normally a moderate walk from the Biscuit Basin boardwalk — currently on the wrong side of an active geological event.

Biscuit Basin's parking and boardwalk have been closed since the July 2024 hydrothermal explosion, and Black Diamond Pool erupted again in April 2026 — possibly larger than the first blast. No reopening date exists. This is an active hazard zone, not an inconvenience.

Getting there

Trailhead
Mystic Falls Trail from Biscuit Basin (CLOSED since July 2024, still closed mid-2026)
Parking
Biscuit Basin lot — closed
Road
Grand Loop Road north of Old Faithful
Hike
2.4 mi round trip, 400 ft of climb (moderate)
Heads up
Unofficial cutoffs circulate online; entering closed hydrothermal terrain is how people end up in USGS incident reports. Wait for the reopening.

When to go

When the basin reopens, June through September; this page will note it. Until then, admire Fairy Falls instead — same neighborhood, open trail.

Where it is

Before you go

The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
