About Indian Well Falls

Indian Well Falls is a 15-foot punchbowl in Connecticut, on Indian Hole Brook.

It's fullest after rain, and flow can drop off during dry spells — plan around recent weather.

Plungeworthy rates Indian Well Falls 5.8/10 — worth a detour. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.

What you'll find

Indian Well Falls is a 15-foot horsetail dropping into a circular splash pool — the 'well' — in a wooded hollow of Indian Well State Park above the Housatonic in Shelton. Small falls, big park: the surrounding state park brings a river beach, boat launch, and picnic grounds.

The falls is a short walk from the park road, prettiest in spring when the horsetail runs full against the dark rock bowl.

Fee logistics mirror Kent Falls: Connecticut plates free, out-of-state pays seasonally — with the wrinkle that November through March the park closes to vehicles and becomes walk-in only, which locals treat as the quiet season.

Before you go

The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
