About Wintergreen Falls
Wintergreen Falls is a 26-foot slide in Connecticut, on Wintergreen Brook.
It's fullest after rain, and flow can drop off during dry spells — plan around recent weather.
Plungeworthy rates Wintergreen Falls 6.9/10 — worth a detour. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.
What you'll find
Know what this listing is: Wintergreen Falls is not a natural waterfall. It's the concrete spillway of Lake Wintergreen's dam at West Rock Ridge in Hamden, built over natural rock — the historic falls that once ran here was obscured when the spillway went in. Waterfall databases carry it anyway; we'd rather tell you what it actually is.
As an engineered feature it has its moments: New Haven Parks added wooden steps and a small viewing landing in 2022, and in March-April flow — or a winter freeze-thaw — the spill over the dam face photographs surprisingly well.
View it from the platform above. Getting to the base is effectively impossible to do safely — steep, slippery terrain with no path — and the cited height figures floating around for this feature aren't backed by any measurement we could verify.
Getting there
- Trailhead
- West Rock Nature Center lower lot, 1090 Wintergreen Avenue, Hamden — short walk to the viewing landing
- Parking
- Nature-center lower lot; about 30 spaces at the Lake Wintergreen trailhead
- Road
- Wintergreen Avenue — paved
- Hike
- 0.3 mi round trip (Easy — to the 2022 viewing platform only)
- Heads up
- Regicide Drive (to the South Overlook and Judges Cave) is open Memorial Day to late October, 8am-6pm.
When to go
March-April flow or winter ice — the spillway is nearly dry in summer. Fold it into a West Rock Ridge hike rather than making it the destination.

Before you go
The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
