About Chapel Falls

Chapel Falls is a 20-foot tiered in Massachusetts, on Chapel Brook. The water falls in 3 distinct tiers.

It's fullest after rain, and flow can drop off during dry spells — plan around recent weather.

Plungeworthy rates Chapel Falls 7.2/10 — worth the drive. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.

What you'll find

Chapel Falls is three ledge cascades — 10, 15, and 20 feet — spread along a third of a mile of Chapel Brook in Ashfield, on a Trustees of Reservations property that also includes Pony Mountain's 1,420-foot summit and the 100-foot climbing cliff of Chapel Ledge.

It's the friendliest waterfall on this list: a gentle, dog-tolerant trail, roadside parking, and pools that families have waded in for generations. Swimming at the pool below the third cascade is customary in summer — common and long-tolerated, though not an officially endorsed Trustees activity, and the current gets stronger than it looks after rain.

Come for the falls, stay for the property — the short Pony Mountain climb adds a summit view to a waterfall walk.

Before you go
