About Norden Falls
Norden Falls is a block in Nebraska, on Niobrara River.
It's fullest after rain, and flow can drop off during dry spells — plan around recent weather.
Plungeworthy rates Norden Falls 4.6/10 — if you're passing. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.
What you'll find
Know what this listing is: 'Norden Falls' is better known as Norden Chute, and it isn't a waterfall — it's a big Class II rapid where the Niobrara drops over a submerged ledge into a churning plunge pool, near the Norden Bridge in Brown County, well downstream of the Valentine-area falls cluster.
That said, it's real, dramatic, and legally reachable — the trail near The Nature Conservancy's Niobrara Valley Preserve mailbox leads to it, and paddlers treat it as the signature whitewater feature of the river.
At lower water, stone ledges emerge that people walk out on. The hydraulic below the ledge is the hazard — admire it from the rock, not the water.
Getting there
- Trailhead
- Trail near the Niobrara Valley Preserve mailbox (same access area as Stairstep Falls)
- Parking
- Small preserve parking
- Road
- Norden Road / gravel county roads, Brown County
- Heads up
- A chute over a submerged ledge, not a vertical drop — which is why height databases list it at zero.
When to go
Spring high water is the loudest show; low water exposes the walkable ledges.
Core paddling season June through August.

Before you go
The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
