About Stairstep Falls
Stairstep Falls is a waterfall in Nebraska.
It's fullest after rain, and flow can drop off during dry spells — plan around recent weather.
Plungeworthy rates Stairstep Falls 3/10 — one for the list. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.
What you'll find
A stepped spring-branch falls inside The Nature Conservancy's 56,000-acre Niobrara Valley Preserve — one of the largest private conservation holdings on the Great Plains, and one of the few where the public is explicitly welcome on foot.
It sits downstream of Big Cedar Falls (also called Twin Falls) with signage near Sharp's Landing, so most visitors meet it from the water on a float. No independently confirmed height — it's the stair-stepped character, not scale, that names it.
The preserve is also home to one of the country's largest bison herds — the drive in can be as memorable as the falls.

Where it is
Before you go
The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
