About Manby Hot Springs
Manby Hot Springs is a natural hot spring in New Mexico.
At that temperature it's temperature unrecorded — check current conditions and always test the water before getting in.
Plungeworthy rates Manby Hot Springs 5.1/10 — if you're passing. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.
What you'll find
Sandy-bottomed 100°F pools among the ruins of an 1890s stagecoach bathhouse, on the Rio Grande's bank at the bottom of the Taos gorge. The old road in is gone for good — now it's a river-runner's stop or a rough fisherman's-trail hike from the John Dunn Bridge, which suits the place.
Getting there
- Trailhead
- Fisherman's trail from John Dunn Bridge (or arrive by raft)
- Parking
- At the bridge area
- Road
- The Tune Drive road access closed permanently in 2021 — do not route via old guides
- Hike
- 5.5 mi round trip (moderate)
- Heads up
- Roughly 2.5–3 unmaintained miles each way with boulder scrambles; no shade at all.
When to go
Year-round; pools periodically wash out in storms and get rebuilt by hands unknown. Carry water like the desert means it.
Rules & fees
- Fee / pass
- None — BLM national monument land
- Camping
- None at the springs
- Warnings
- Clothing-optional tradition; pack out everything; the river is pushy — mind kids at the pool lips.

Where it is
Before you go
The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
