About Petrero Waterfall
Petrero Waterfall is a waterfall in New Mexico, on Cañada del Potrero.
Fed largely by snowmelt, it runs hardest in late spring and early summer and can thin to a trickle by late season.
Plungeworthy rates Petrero Waterfall 3/10 — one for the list. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.
What you'll find
A tiered waterfall in a narrow pink-granite slot canyon near El Rito — about 50 feet of stacked drops, the tallest tier around 25 feet. Maps spell it “Petrero”; locally it's the falls in Cañada del Potrero.
The creek runs year-round, the approach is short, and there's a big dispersed camping area at the trailhead directly across from El Rito's rock-climbing crags. One of the best effort-to-reward waterfalls in northern New Mexico.
Getting there
- Trailhead
- Signed “Cañada del Potrero” pullout on Forest Road 44, about 3.8 miles up the dirt road from El Rito — across from the climbing crags
- Parking
- At the pullout; dispersed camping nearby
- Road
- Graded dirt, passable to most cars in dry weather
- Hike
- 1.6 mi round trip (Moderate — a half-mile of old forest road, then a creekside path into the slot)
When to go
Perennial flow; early May is the sweet spot. Stay out of the slot after rain — the polished granite turns to glass.

Before you go
The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
