125 feet of the Horsepasture River — a federally protected Wild & Scenic river that runs strong when every other Blue Ridge falls has gone thin — throwing its namesake rainbow into the gorge on sunny afternoons. Turtleback and Drift Falls wait just upstream for the same ticket.

Trailhead: Rainbow Falls Trailhead, Grassy Ridge Access, Gorges State Park, Sapphire
Parking: Visitor center lot, 976 Grassy Ridge Road
Road: Paved to the lot; gravel then earthen trail beyond
Hike: 3 mi round trip, 770 ft of climb (strenuous)
Heads up: The trail starts in the state park and crosses into Pisgah National Forest. Continue a third of a mile past Rainbow for Turtleback Falls.

When to go

Any season — the Wild & Scenic designation protects a flow that holds year-round. Weekends are busy; the climb out filters the crowd.

Warnings: People have been swept over this falls from the rocks above — a TV anchor in 2016, a man saving his dog in 2018. Eleven warning signs line the fence for a reason. Stay below it.
