About Woonsocket Falls

Woonsocket Falls is a dam in Rhode Island, on Blackstone River.

It's fullest after rain, and flow can drop off during dry spells — plan around recent weather.

Plungeworthy rates Woonsocket Falls 4.1/10 — if you're passing. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.

What you'll find

Woonsocket Falls is the largest single drop on the Blackstone River — better than thirty feet of water coming over the dam at Market Square, in the middle of downtown Woonsocket. The first sawmill went up here in 1666, and the six mill villages that grew around this drop became the city.

This is an industrial falls and doesn't pretend otherwise: the flow runs through Army Corps flood-control gates installed after a catastrophic early-1950s flood, and the dam is an active piece of infrastructure, not a relic.

Market Square Pavilion puts you right at the brink with historical waysides on the mill era — a flat, accessible viewing platform a few steps from parking.

When to go

Year-round — the gates control the flow, so this isn't a snowmelt-dependent falls. After heavy rain the full width thunders.

Where it is

Before you go

The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
