About Cascade Falls

Cascade Falls is a waterfall in South Dakota, on Cascade Creek.

It's fullest after rain, and flow can drop off during dry spells — plan around recent weather.

Plungeworthy rates Cascade Falls 3.5/10 — one for the list. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.

What you'll find

A low, wide travertine ledge where warm water slides into South Dakota's best natural swimming hole. No source publishes a height because height isn't the point: Cascade Creek runs a constant 67°F, fed by Cascade Springs — the largest spring complex in the Black Hills, discharging from six known points.

The pool below the falls ranges from kid-depth wading shelves to a deeper central swimming pocket, all a short walk from a Forest Service picnic ground.

The warm water also supports plants found nowhere else in the state — stream orchid, tulip gentian, southern maidenhair fern.

Before you go

The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
