About Sylvan Lake Falls
Sylvan Lake Falls is a tiered in South Dakota. The water falls in 3 distinct tiers.
It's fullest after rain, and flow can drop off during dry spells — plan around recent weather.
Plungeworthy rates Sylvan Lake Falls 4.2/10 — if you're passing. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.
What you'll find
Honest label first: this is a small man-made dam spillway, not a natural waterfall. Sylvan Lake was created in the 1890s by damming Sunday Gulch, and the little falls spills at the dam among the granite spires that make this corner of Custer State Park famous.
Nobody publishes a height because there isn't much of one. What earns the stop is everything around it — the mile-long lakeshore loop threading between giant granite boulders, with the spillway as one pretty moment on the walk.
Come for Sylvan Lake, which is genuinely one of South Dakota's great places; take the spillway as a bonus, not a destination.
Getting there

- Hike
- 1 mi round trip (Easy lakeshore loop; the separate Sunday Gulch Trail starting near the dam is the strenuous option)

Where it is
Before you go
The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
