The 12 Best Waterfalls in Kansas
Kansas has more waterfalls than anyone expects — and almost every one is a fishing-lake spillway pouring over natural limestone caprock. The Flint Hills' layered rock means that when a 1930s dam sends water over the edge, the result looks convincingly like a waterfall, and after a wet spring it genuinely is one. A few — Elk Falls, Pillsbury Crossing, Butcher Falls — are the real, no-dam article.
These twelve are the ones worth a drive, topped by a creek you literally drive through and the state's tallest falls at 35 feet. The smaller stops — Hollow Falls' boardwalk in Sedan, the 1904 swinging bridge beside Little Biddle Falls, the Clem Road ford at Cherry Creek — get their own pages, as do the ones you can't just visit: Butcher Falls, arguably the state's prettiest, is on Bill Kurtis's ranch and takes a phone call; Lake Kahola's 55-foot spillway staircase belongs to a private homeowners association; and Cedar Lake Falls in Olathe is closed through 2026 for a dam rebuild.
The recurring fine print: Kansas state fishing lakes are free to visit, but swimming is officially prohibited at them — Pillsbury Crossing's wading-pool reputation notwithstanding — and every spillway falls here lives and dies by recent rain. Go within a week of a good storm.
Five feet tall, up to 60 feet wide, and the road fords straight across the limestone slab above it — the pioneer crossing on Deep Creek is the most fun approach to any waterfall in Kansas.
