About Butcher Falls
Butcher Falls is a 15-foot waterfall in Kansas, on Rock Creek.
It's fullest after rain, and flow can drop off during dry spells — plan around recent weather.
Plungeworthy rates Butcher Falls 5.7/10 — worth a detour. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.
What you'll find
Maybe the most scenic natural falls in Kansas — a 10-to-15-foot plunge into a punchbowl pool on Pool Creek, carved into 300-million-year-old Oread Limestone. It sits on the Red Buffalo Ranch, broadcaster Bill Kurtis's working cattle ranch northwest of Sedan — visiting is welcome but arranged, not walk-up. (Sources split on the height: the University of Kansas's GeoKansas says 10 feet, KansasTravel says 14. Our database listed the creek as Rock Creek; it's Pool Creek.)
Call the ranch at (620) 725-4022, or stop at the Red Buffalo Gift Shop at 107 E. Main in Sedan and ask. Once arranged, access runs 100 yards above and below the falls, daylight hours only. No standard day fee is published — confirm terms when you call.
The ranch separately sells guided experiences — horseback, Land Rover, and horse-and-carriage tours to the falls and to 'Prairiehenge,' a stone monument on the property — plus bunkhouse and cabin stays. Those are extras, not requirements.

Before you go
The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
