About Shoal Creek Falls

Shoal Creek Falls is a waterfall in Missouri, on Shoal Creek.

It's fullest after rain, and flow can drop off during dry spells — plan around recent weather.

Plungeworthy rates Shoal Creek Falls 3.5/10 — one for the list. The score weighs its scale, how confidently it's mapped, and its character.

What you'll find

Everyone in Joplin calls this Grand Falls, and it's Missouri's largest continuously flowing natural waterfall: Shoal Creek pouring 12 feet over a 163-foot-wide ledge of Mississippian chert. The "Shoal Creek Falls" label survives mostly on stock-photo captions.

Around 1903 this was the place to be — dance pavilion, boathouses, a German Village. All gone. Today it's a bare-bones city day-use park: parking lot, creek, falls, nothing else. No restrooms, no lifeguard.

A low dam upstream feeds a reservoir that supplies part of Joplin's water system, which is also why the falls never quits flowing.

Warnings
People have died here: a 16-year-old drowned in July 2025, and a man went over the falls on a raft in June 2022 and never resurfaced. The current is unpredictable, the rocks are slick, there is no lifeguard, and officials tell people to stay clear of the falls and downstream water when the creek is high. Take that at face value.

Before you go

The pin marks the feature, not a trailhead or a legal route in. Some sit on private land or need a real hike, and conditions change with season and rain. Check local access, don't trespass, and never enter water — hot or cold — where it isn't safe.
